Joining the Wise Owl group is an important milestone for our 3 to 5 year olds. At Hardingstone Day Nursery, our emphasis is on preparing our older children so that they are ready for school.
We incorporate the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) into our daily activities and introduce our children to literacy and numeracy, whilst also encouraging them to be confident and independent investigators and explorers.
The Wise Owl room is divided into well-defined “learning areas”, each equipped with resources that focus on a particular area of learning. These include emergent writing, mathematics, reading, information technology, role play, construction and many other activities
In addition, specialist teachers provide French and Musicbugs classes for our over 3 year olds.
Improving social development, communication and interaction skills are a priority for our children and we regularly ensure the children engage in organised activities that are specifically designed to encourage:
- Physical skills both gross & fine
- Communication and teamwork
- Imaginative and creative play
- Talking and negotiation
- Knowledge of their own abilities
- Children to manage their own risk
- Knowledge and appreciation of nature
Each child has a “Learning Journey folder” in which we record their progress in each area of learning. These help us to identify individual development needs and to plan activities designed to address these.
Older children are able to work together well and through the well planned activities are able to explore books, stories and numbers. Ofsted 2014
